Drug trafficking is a serious offense and is treated differently from most other offenses. Under Florida law, a conviction for drug trafficking normally requires a mandatory minimum sentence, regardless of what the judge thinks about the defendant or the seriousness of the conduct. Unlike other offenses, an individual convicted of drug trafficking must serve the entire prison sentence — there is no reduction for "good time" or "gain time." If a 15-year minimum sentence is imposed, the individual will serve every day of those 15 years in a state prison facility.
